Myth 5: The new risk assessment calculator is incorrect and should be ignored.

Truth: new equations for risk assessment, and the computer based on them, are based on the best scientific data available.
They represent a significant improvement over previous approaches, which were based on studies primarily on white men, as a result of risk factors and development of heart disease over time.
These approaches have been familiar based on the best data available at the time patients.
We now know that cardiovascular disease can evolve differently in different populations, and we know that the risk of having a stroke is very important to most of us.
The new guidelines are based on data that allow African-Americans, for the first time to assess the specific risk for them.

In addition, for all of us , the guidelines include an assessment of our risk for both heart attack and stroke, which has not been calculated in the previous risk tools . And for young people , especially women , the opportunity to watch their risk of their lives, rather than just the next 10 years , giving them greater power to make choices now, while there is still time, that give them longer and healthier.
