Myth 4 : Statins have many side effects that cause more harm than good

Truth: Many studies, particularly the most recent available data analyzes show that statins are very safe drugs.
While side effects may occur, almost all of them are rapidly reversible and not life threatening, unlike heart attacks and strokes they prevent.
The most recent Cochrane analysis shows a decrease in the number of deaths in all cardiovascular events, in all coronary events, total stroke events, and procedures to restore blood flow to an organ or to save a limb.
An increase in type 2 diabetes incidence has been viewed in one of two studies that examined carefully, but studies have shown that even this risk is outweighed by the benefits of this class of drugs.

Of course, patients should always discuss the risks of all medications with their health care provider and should report side effects quickly.
